We had a chance to speak to Garrett’s father Greg this morning and learned more about his ongoing recovery. Garrett was recently moved to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he continues to heal from a list of injuries that have required him to be heavily sedated until last weekend.
In all, Goodwin suffered 3 fractured vertebra, 6 broken ribs, a punctured lung and a separated shoulder. The spinal damage appears to be permanent at this point and Garrett is without mobility from the waist down. “It all happened so fast that you keep thinking you’re going to wake up and it was just a bad dream,” said Greg. Now that he has been able to communicate with his family, Garrett is in good spirits and ready to take on the challenges ahead. An engineering student at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Garrett is keeping his focus on returning to school for his second year. The shoulder and lung injury have delayed the rehab process, but being a strong kid with a muscular upper body will surely be to his advantage.
Goodwin will rehab in Chicago for the next 6 weeks or so and hopes to get an online forum started soon so he can let everyone know how he’s doing. We will post a link as soon as it becomes available.
